30 by 30 at 30+? (Commercial Real Estate Continuing Education)

 

People outside the commercial real estate business may not know that brokers have their own “back to school” time. We must successfully complete 30 continuing education (CE) hours before we renew our license every other year by June 30. Mandated by MN state law, we must complete 15 CE hours each of the two years. That means we head “back to school” each year to renew our 30 CE hours by the next license renewal.

 

With my son Levi back in school now, it’s also my back to school time. After 30+ years in the business, why do I still have to go to school? What do I really get out of it?

 

1.      It’s a way for me to remain current with industry changes and keep my finger on the pulse of market fluctuations. Not only do we hear from presenters regarding particular topics, but it’s a fantastic time to catch up with my fellow brokers and discuss the market. There’s something energizing about being in a room with people who share experiences and expertise. I highly recommend Minnesota REjournal summits. They are definitely more beneficial than online courses.

2.     If you’ve been reading my blog over the years (thank you), you know I see myself as a lifelong learner. Learning keeps me moving forward. This summer I’ve enjoyed moving forward on my electric assist bike! 😃 Even though I’m in great shape at 55, it makes me feel like a kid again! Hills? No problem! In the long run, CE events are our assist. The knowledge gained and connections made make those challenging deals easier to get done.

3.     Like Levi, who loves to see his friends at school, I enjoy catching up with people I’ve met over the years. I also like to meet brokers new to the business. CE events usually end up as a way to add to my network, exchange insight, and provide value to others.

4.    In turn, it’s a great time to find mentors and mentees. In my previous blog, Figure It Out, I discuss the return on investment mentorship brings to both the mentor and mentee. Each gain insight and learn new things which fuels both careers.

5.     Bottom line, continuing my education (formally and informally) is a sign of integrity. It’s a signal to my clients and peers that I’m committed to staying at the top of my game. I’m not coasting on my years of experience. I don’t want to be a broker –– or anything for that matter –– unwilling to evolve or change. We all can do better and be better by continuing to gain knowledge. Pedal on!

 

Conclusion

There are perks to state mandated commercial real estate continuing education licensing requirements. With the purpose for brokers to remain current and learn new things, CE events also provide opportunities to network and establish mentee/mentor relationships. By focusing on betterment, a broker communicates integrity and their value of growth.
